Common questions
Is it really free to appeal a parking ticket?
Yes. Appealing to the company or council costs nothing, and escalating to POPLA, the Independent Appeals Service, the Traffic Penalty Tribunal or London Tribunals is free for motorists. Voidly does not charge you either, and there is no account to create.
How long do I have to appeal a PCN?
Usually 28 days from the date on the notice, but the important deadline is often 14 days. Challenge a council PCN within 14 days and most authorities keep the 50% discount open for a further 14 days if they reject you. Private operators normally offer a reduced sum for 14 days too.
Is a private parking charge the same as a council fine?
No. A council Penalty Charge Notice is a statutory penalty under road traffic law. A private Parking Charge Notice is an invoice for an alleged breach of contract. That distinction matters, because a contract only exists if the signs gave adequate notice of the terms.
What are the most common reasons a parking appeal succeeds?
Inadequate, hidden or faded signage. Notice to Keeper letters arriving outside the statutory deadline. Camera systems reading two separate visits as one long stay. A few minutes over a paid period, which the grace period covers. A valid permit or Blue Badge that was held but not recorded. And payment machines that were not working.
