Appeal a clean air, congestion or toll penalty
These are civil Penalty Charge Notices, challengeable free of charge. The most common reason they are cancelled is simple: the vehicle was compliant, or the charge was paid and never matched to the journey.
Clean air and emissions zones
Compliance depends on the vehicle's emissions standard, not its age. Misclassification is common, and a compliant vehicle means no charge was ever payable.
Congestion charging
Separate from emissions schemes, with different hours and exemptions. You can receive one penalty for each on the same journey, and each must be challenged separately.
Tolls and crossings
Free-flow tolls have no barriers, so drivers routinely cross without realising a charge applies. Payment is usually due by midnight the following day.
